HURT Story
It all started when...
In the early 1980's, John Salmonson set the vision for a small band of eclectic runners named PJ, Richard, Randy, Vernon, Ed, Carl and "Radar," who were no longer content with only a marathon. Others would join their ranks along the years. They were soon running 36 miles uphill to the summit of 10,023 ft. Hale'akala on Maui to train for largely unknown ultras like Western States. The HURT 'ohana of the 80's was a tight-knit and tough group.
Decades later, the infamous HURT 100 came to be, challenging the toughest athletes on the planet over relentless rainforest climbs, water crossings, and treacherous roots. Since then, hundreds of runners have put their love for the trails to the test on one of the most deceivingly difficult ultras in the world.
HURT Film
We are making a feature film...
And it's all about 'ohana. The goal of the film is to tell the story of the HURT 'ohana, or family, that has guided runners on this 100 mile journey for nearly 20 years.
All who have participated in the HURT 100 have come to cherish and embrace the 'ohana that exists here. This film is to share with the world how it all began and how it has become one of the most iconic and memorable races on the globe.

It will feature the forefathers of HURT, past finishers, and many others who are proud to call themselves a part of the HURT 'ohana.

Production will begin at the 2017 edition of the HURT 100.

"We are excited to have Matt, Steven, Bryson and Jimmy teaming up to tell the story of HURT. As a high school runner training under the founders of HURT, Matt grew up loving Hawaii's trails and the HURT 'ohana. Twenty five years later, the 3 x HURT 100 entrant, 1 x HURT 100 finisher and Triple Trek record holder has sought our blessing to try and capture the uniqueness and magic of the HURT 'ohana on the big screen with three accomplished filmmakers. HURT has fiercely and deliberately remained non-profit over the decades, maintaining one of the lowest entry fees for elite ultramarathons in the world. While HURT as an organization will in no way profit from this film, we are excited to endorse these four guys' community-funded endeavor to share our story with the world in hopes of inspiring authentic running communities that foster both adventure and aloha in the wild places."
aloha,
John Salmonson, HURT 100 Race Director
